DESCRIPTION

When a Royal Navy captain seized a ship for illegally transporting enslaved Bermudians to another colony, it sparked discussions about the future of slavery across the British Empire. The case reached London, drawing the attention of leading members of the Anti-Slavery Society and a future king. This talk explores the illegal slave trade the captain believed he had uncovered, why the case was considered a precedent for the treatment of enslaved people, particularly children, and how one local incident carried far-reaching implications.
