To Be Free Is Very Sweet”: Bermuda’s Emancipation

The first installment in The Bermuda Heritage Documentary Series. Release in 2014 this episode focuses on Bermuda’s contemporary commemoration of emancipation from slavery, exploring the connections between emancipation, Cup Match, and the Friendly Societies; the African Diaspora Heritage Trail that features sites of memory; and slavery as it has been portrayed in Bermudian literature and drama. Featuring interviews with educators Angela Barry and Dr. Radell Tankard, Friendly Society member Joy Wilson-Tucker, and ADHT director Maxine Esdaille, this documentary will inspire a new appreciation for the heritage that makes Bermuda unique.
